Amber Rose has been called many things, and many are not positive.

Since she was first introduced to us in 2008 as then Kanye West’s girlfriend/muse she was always something of a mystery to all of us.  We knew very little but saw everything via pictures in the media of her always confidently showing her body so as a result, of course, the tabloids have had no holds when labeling Rose as a slut, gold digger, and countess of other negative names. For what exactly? Nothing other than doing what men do but face no repercussions from society. She loves sex, had been open about supporting her family as a stripper when only 15, and she is confident in herself.

Now sexism exists in the queer community, the first hook up apps to surface were for gay men. In fact, the small number of female hooking up apps are generally seedy looking and often don’t have much of a members base since they receive little to no support. Most bars and nightclubs in the queer community are catered around gay men. Why do we think this is so? As a community that is based on the idea of equality, why do we unknowingly make it easier for men to go out and be men, to hook up to find a one night stand, to go to a club that is full of men?

One of the reasons why I specifically chose to write for this website was because I felt women were not given a voice or represented in the gay community. Amber Rose’s slutwalk last weekend again let me know that whether gay or straight society holds a different standard of what levels of sexual promiscuity are ok for men and what levels are not for women. The comments some men on social media were making towards the pictures of women that attended this where absolutely disgusting and I have no doubt in my mind that we have a long way to go before women whether gay or straight will be able equally treated when sex comes to play, however  actively addressing the issue and having our voices heard will always make an impact. At the end of the day, we have just that, our voice.

It is never acceptable to call someone a slut. Sex shaming is never okay.
