Here are some the major surprises:
- Network and To Kill a Mockingbird not nominated for Best Play, despite the fact that many thought either would take home the award come June 9th. Gary and Ink took their place, and both these underdog plays received quite a few unexpected nominations, especially in the supporting actor/actress categories.
- Although it was somewhat expected that Head Over Heels, Pretty Woman, and Gettin’ the Band Back Together would be shut out, the lack of nomination for Be More Chill (other than Joe Iconis) was quite a surprise. Will Roland, Stephanie Hsu, and George Salazar were all potential nominees in the acting categories, and many thought the show would pick up a Best Musical nomination.
- The Boys in the Band, despite opening last summer, still managed to get a few nominations (unlike the other early open, Straight White Men). Similarly, it was somewhat surprising that Bernhardt/Hamlet, another early open, picked up nominations for Best Actress (Janet McTeer) and Best Play.
- Beetlejuice opened to mostly negative reviews, but came out with 8 nominations, making it one of the top-nominated musicals. Almost all of its nominations were surprises since many thought the show might get shut out.
- Beth Leavel was considered a shoe-in for The Prom, but in a delightful surprise Caitlin Kinnunen also picked up a nomination with her co-star in the Best Actress in a Musical category. Several other surprises double performer nominations within one category include: Kristine Nielsen and Julie White for Gary and Emphraim Sykes and Jeremy Pope for Ain’t Too Proud. Jeremy Pope also scored a nomination for Choir Boy, making part of the very small list of actors to ever get nominated for two acting Tonys in one season.
- Although Roundabout’s shows received several nominations, True West was shut out, including no Best Actor nominations for Paul Dano and Ethan Hawke.
There were also some upsetting snubs:
- Reeve Carney is the only member of the principle cast of Hadestown who was not nominated, which was certainly a surprise.
- Bonnie Milligan was widely believed to be Head Over Heels’ major chance for a nomination (or Spencer Lift for choreography, since both received nomination for Outer Critics Cricle and Drama Desk Awards). Tragically, Bonnie Milligan’s hilarious performance and legendary belts were snubbed a nomination.
- In addition to Lift, Casey Nicholaw not receiving a choreography nomination for The Prom was somewhat of a snub.
- After her win last year, Glenda Jackson not being nominated for her performance in King Lear is surprising to say the least, even though the production did not receive positive reviews, she did.
- Although Ali Stroker, Mary Testa, and Damon Duanno were all nominated for Oklahoma! neither Rebecca Naomi Jones nor Patrick Vaill were. In particularly, Rebecca Naomi Jones is giving one of the most nuanced, painful performances of the season, so her lack of a nomination was shocking, and is probably the most major snub.
