Our journey kicked off in Toronto, a city that embodies modernity and history in equal measure. Wandering through the Victorian bay-and-gable homes of Rosedale and the historic enclave of Wychwood Park felt like stepping into a living museum. The Distillery District, with its cobblestone streets and preserved Victorian industrial architecture, offered a charming blend of the past and present. We spent the night before the cruise in the City to soak up some culture (and make sure our embarkation day was stress-free).

Stepping aboard the Viking Octantis, the excitement was palpable. Our stateroom was a sleek, Scandinavian-inspired haven. The panoramic views of Toronto and the water set the perfect tone for the adventure ahead. We started with a safety briefing paired with a glass of champagne—not a bad way, if you ask me.

Dining on the Octantis was a culinary revelation. Each meal showcased the finest local ingredients and the chef’s creativity. Breakfasts were a delightful mix of fresh fruits, pastries, and gourmet dishes. Lunches took us on a gastronomic tour of international cuisines. Dinners? Multi-course feasts that rivaled any fine dining experience on land. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised—not having had the best experience with cruise ship dining. (Looking at you, Aida)

The ship’s focus on scientific enrichment was a standout. We participated in hands-on activities in the ship’s science lab—extracting DNA from strawberries and learning about the ship’s scientific programs. The resident scientists were passionate and engaging, bringing the natural world to life. We were also on deck when they launched a weather balloon, in partnership with NOAA/NWS.

The Engineering Marvel: Traversing the Welland Canal

Our first night aboard took us through the Welland Canal, a marvel of 19th-century engineering. Built to bypass the mighty Niagara River, the canal comprises eight locks. Watching our vessel navigate these locks was like witnessing a well-rehearsed dance. Unfortunately, it was a bit too tight in some places. Good thing the crew brings along many gallons of white paint for touch ups after that passage.

Port Colborne, our gateway to Niagara Falls, offered a thrilling encounter with nature’s power. The falls hurl 42 million gallons of water down 20 stories every minute. The roar of the water was both thrilling and humbling. We explored (though on a different boat, of course) the three smaller cataracts: Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and American Falls. Each offered a unique perspective. The experience was a powerful reminder of nature’s raw beauty and strength.

Unfortunately, the weather prohibited us from going ashore at Point Pelee. The crew shared stories about this pristine area, sparking our imagination. Known for its woodlands and freshwater marshes, Point Pelee is a national park and a Ramsar Convention protected site.

We were even treated to the stunning Northern Lights during our voyage.

Cultural Immersion: Detroit’s Rich Tapestry

Detroit, our first US stop, did not disappoint. Known as the birthplace of Motown and the US auto industry, Detroit is rich in history and culture. We visited the Henry Ford Museum, delving into the city’s industrial past and innovative spirit. The only annoying thing here was that the US Government forced everyone off the boat to do customs/immigration. Usually, they don’t we’re told. It was a pretty painless experience, though not quite as hassle-free as visiting Mexico where they barely check to see your passport exists.

Exploring Detroit’s waterfront, we marveled at postmodern and art deco skyscrapers. The architecture was a blend of old and new, reflecting the city’s dynamic spirit. Detroit’s UNESCO designation as a “City of Design” is well-deserved.

The spirit of Motown was palpable. We visited iconic sites and felt the musical legacy in the air. Detroit’s energy was infectious, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for its rich tapestry of influences.

The Hidden Gem: Alpena’s Quiet Charm

Alpena, in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, was a delightful surprise. This quiet town faces Lake Huron’s Thunder Bay and is home to the Alpena Light. The town’s history is rooted in fishing and logging.

We explored the art deco County Courthouse and the late-Victorian IOOF Centennial Building. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Alpena’s blend of natural beauty and architectural charm made it memorable.

A scenic drive along Lake Huron’s shoreline offered breathtaking views. The deep blue waters contrasted against the rugged coastline. Alpena’s quiet charm and stunning landscapes were a highlight.

Timeless Beauty: Mackinac Island’s Victorian Charm

Mackinac Island is a gem of the Great Lakes. This bucolic haven preserves gilded Victorian-era treasures along car-free streets. Horse-drawn carriages add to the island’s timeless charm. We spent a delightful day visiting Fort Mackinac and biking along the shoreline. The island’s natural beauty and historic charm were captivating. More than 80% of Mackinac is protected as a state park.

The island’s famous fudge was a culinary delight—though it causes them to import a staggering amount of sugar each week. This sweet treat perfectly complemented our day of exploration. Mackinac’s blend of history, natural beauty, and delicious treats was a highlight.

A Grand Finale: Milwaukee’s Vibrant Scene

Our journey concluded in Milwaukee, a city known for its brewing heritage and vibrant culture. First settled by Europeans in 1818, Milwaukee is now a center of art, history, and culture. We explored the historic Third Ward, visiting art galleries, boutique shops, and trendy cafes.

The Milwaukee Art Museum, with its striking architecture and impressive collection, was a highlight. The museum’s exhibits were a journey through time and art. Milwaukee’s brewing tradition was another highlight.

We took a brewery tour, sampling some of the city’s famous craft beers. History, culture, and delicious brews made our time in Milwaukee memorable. We left with a sense of satisfaction and wonderful memories.

Reflecting on Our Journey: A Voyage of Enrichment

Flying back home from Chicago, we reflected on our journey aboard the Viking Octantis. It was more than just a vacation; it was a voyage of enrichment and discovery. The luxurious accommodations and exceptional dining were thoughtfully curated. The Viking Octantis is a sanctuary for the intellectually curious. It’s a place to relax and learn. The enrichment programs and lectures offered a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding.

As a gay couple, we appreciated the inclusive environment on the Viking Octantis. The crew and passengers were respectful and inclusive. This inclusivity, combined with the ship’s luxurious amenities, made for an exceptional experience.

Our cruise from Toronto to Milwaukee was unforgettable. It was a perfect blend of luxury, education, and adventure. We highly recommend the Viking Octantis for a unique and enriching travel experience. Just make sure you get the drink package.
