Auckland, a beautiful city in one of the most liberal and sex-positive places in the world, is finally finding its spot on the gay tourism map. Thanks to its chill vibe, fantastic nightlife, and gorgeous beaches, this metropolitan city is all filled with accepting people, breathtaking sites and plenty of cute cafés perfect for grabbing a cup of coffee. So, if you also want to check out what’s Auckland all about, here’s a little yet useful guide to take with you on your trip.

Stroll down Karangahape Road

While ‘K’Road has a truly vibrant and interesting nightlife (you’ll have a blast at Family Bar if you love drag) that’s not all it can offer to us queers. During the day, you can explore various shops, boutiques, galleries, and cafes. Of course, if you’re looking for a different kind of tourism, you’ll have no problems finding sex-shops, brothels and strip clubs. However, what makes Karangahape Road stand out, at least in my eyes, is its weird (and I mean it in the best way possible) vibe that’s still going strong. So, make sure to visit this lively part of Auckland until gentrification gets to it!

Catch a game of rugby

While my skin crawls with the sheer thought of sports, this one I truly love, for various reasons. Plus, you mustn’t leave New Zealand without catching a game of rugby, their most beloved sport. New Zealand Falcons, Auckland’s only gay rugby team is kicking ass and always in need of a few additional fans. Make sure to check out their Facebook page and go cheer them on during their next match. The sights are amazing, and you’ll meet many new people who share your passion for sexy guys or good sports.

Waitakere Ranges

To reach this hidden gem of Auckland, you’ll need to work a bit harder (there are no buses, so learn from my mistake). Even though it’s a wonderful spot, most tourists don’t even know about it which is indeed a pity. This West Coast park is covered in ancient rainforests and black sand beaches swept by the wind. It’s also home to many native animals, so if you’re into photography, make sure to bring your camera. Your safest bet is to check out Avis car rental and grab some wheels that will take you to your destination. You can make a fun little road trip out of your Waitakere Ranges visit. Everyone loves road trips!

Mission Bay

This inner city beach is a real gay hot-spot. Gays love to flock to places that are easy to access and filled with cafes and restaurants, and Mission Bay is just that. If you’re looking to have fun and meet local trade at the beach, just open Grindr, and you’ll have plenty of guys to choose from. However, if you’re into a different kind of exercise (I was feeling super guilty for missing my workouts) get sweatin’ at one of the Mission Bay gyms that are super inclusive and attitude-free. However, make sure to keep your clothes on in Mission Bay! If you’re looking for a place where you can get an all-over tan, hit Ladies Bay beach (more popular with guys, though) or Pohutukawa Bay.

Hobbiton

This one literally made me scream like a fan-girl that I am! No matter if you’re a fan of Lord of the Rings franchise or can’t get Orlando Bloom as a sexy elf out of your mind, Hobbiton is a great place full of fun and magic. Book a day tour to this gem and grab lunch at the Green Dragon Inn and explore the Shire. On your way back, take a boat to the glowworm grotto where thousands of phosphorescent worms set the ocean alight! It’s a truly unique sight.

From city strolls to nature exploration expeditions, Auckland has something interesting to offer to every type of gay. So, grab your queer squad and get ready for an unforgettable New Zealand adventure!
